NAKHLATEC provides technical expertise on propagation, plant tissue culture and biotechnology of a wide range of crops. Apart from date palm, crops for which it can offer specialist advice and practical assistance include:
Palms: Sago palm, oil palm, coconut palm and Kentia palm
Beverages: Cacao and coffee
Nut trees: Cashew and pistachio
Forest trees: Acacias, eucalypts, dipterocarps, Albizzia, Cedrela, Ocotea, Pinus and Picea
Fruit trees: Papaya, apple, pear, plum, cherry, avocado, citrus and mango
Vegetables: Sweet potato, Dioscorea yams, taro, dasheen, carrot and garlic
Field crops: Cotton, barley, maize, tobacco and potato
Ornamentals: Peony, lilies, orchids, Narcissus and other bulb crops
Medicinal plants: Steroid, steroidal alkaloid and cardenolide-producing plants
Biomass/Bioenergy crops: Miscanthus, willow and poplar
Specialist services are also available in the following areas of tissue culture propagation:
· Production of starter cultures of the species listed above and of other closely related plants;
· Improved weaning and establishment of micro-plants using bio-inoculants and modified rooting substrates specifically designed for modular planting and ease of handling;
· Access to new Rotogro® technology (for details contact NAKHLATEC). This novel planetary system of raising plants in liquid hydroponic culture can be applied to large scale cloning of datepalm and other plant species which have special requirements for the provision of healthy mother stock plants to supply tissue explants without excessive internal and external contamination and also in those cases where weaning of micro-plants takes protracted periods and for which stable environmental conditions are essential;
· Establishment of GMO containment growing structures in the tropics;
· Setting-up and deployment of advanced genetic fingerprinting and genetic transformation techniques to meet the increasing demands for crop improvement using GM technology.
Scientific editing and manuscript preparation can be arduous tasks for scientists experiencing heavy pressures on their time as teaching and administration loads increase.
NAKHLATEC now offers an editing, review and manuscript preparation service for scientists wishing to receive assistance editing and improving their manuscripts. Translations of manuscript texts from either Spanish, French or Swedish into English can be provided upon request.
Writing in English language too poses a barrier to some young scientists presenting results of their own research in the top international journals and other media.
